It is 1948; World War II is over but the world is not in Peace. In San Francisco, Barbara Lavette, former socialite turned author and foreign correspondent, is trhing to make a life with her husband, Bernie, a poor mechanic and soldier of fortune whom she met in Paris, and their small son, Sam. While Barbara is unconcerned with the gossip surrounding her marriage, Bernie will do anything to prove his worth to her and to the society that shins him. Then comes a mysterious and urgent call, a secret mission for Bernie, and a train of events that leads Barbara to a confrontation with a Congress caugt up in tghe McCarthy Communist witch hunt. Forced to stand trial, Barbara must do whatever it takes to defend her values, clear her name, and find a way to reunite her family.
